Portable Nonsense

Panels and Pressure

Thanks to fudging with some self-hosted web-server stuff and getting an RSS reader up and running, I've been reading a little more than usual lately. Some of it old and some of it new.

The old is mostly comic strips by now deceased or retired authors, the new is today's digital news. (Some of it from mainstream sources, some from independent ones.)

It's interesting to see the juxtaposition between the world that these comics lived in, most living in the golden age of comic strips that was the 80s and 90s, and the results of what those strips lampooned at the time. It's not that those writers and illustrators knew something that we didn't now. It's that we all knew back then, but couldn't do anything about it. We didn't have them what we didn't have then, capital/power/resources/etc... The sad thing now is that we've got even less of it. Such is the millennial experience though.

  1. Do what you're told to do because it's the right/best way to do something.
  2. Finish that thing you were told to do but then get asked, "Why did you do that that way? You should have done this instead."
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 off and on for a decade or two.
  4. Stop trying.
  5. Do your best to pick up the pieces, get back in shape and support the next generations when it's their turn at bat.

Or something like that. But let's not forget that most of us are victims in one way or another, no matter what generation we're from. Either from broken policy or propaganda disguised as "the only option". Try not to look across the other side of the bus and find your enemy, odds are you're not going to find them there. You've got to look elsewhere for the designer labels and neighbourhoods with real strict curfews to narrow down just who to turn your ire towards.

Try to take a cue from the tiny little children of ink that ventured out into the world years before us and recognized a fundamental truth. Society ain't perfect, but it's a better place if you show up; each and every day.

Just mind that punk in the blue dress and her trigger finger on that football.
